We Need Diverse Books announced the 2023 Walter Dean Myers Awards on Jan. 10, 2023. Man Made Monsters by Andrea L. Rogers, with illustrations by Jeff Edwards, won in the teen category. Choosing Brave: How Mamie Till-Mobley and Emmett Till Sparked the Civil Rights Movement by Angela Joy, with illustrations by Janelle Washington, won in the younger readers category.
Honor books were also named: All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir, and Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes, were Honor books in the teen category. Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler by Ibi Zoboi, and The Last Mapmakerby Christina Soontornvat, were Honor books in the younger readers category.
