Since many Bay Area families do not celebrate Easter, it may be more fun to do a Spring storytime just on eggs – and you can incorporate some science into the storytime! After reading some of the following books, you could make a Humpty Dumpty jigsaw puzzle, or make a paper collage egg similar to the artwork found in Patricia Polacco’s RECHENKA’S EGGS.
Heller, Ruth. CHICKEN’S AREN’T THE ONLY ONES. Beautiful color illustrations highlight this look at the various animals that lay eggs.
Meddaugh, Susan. HARRY ON THE ROCKS. Harry strands his boat on an island and he sees an egg hatch – it is a strange lizard with wings!
Dunrea, Olivier. OLLIE. Ollie is a stubborn egg that won’t hatch until Gossie and Gertie use reverse psychology on it!
Ernst, Lisa Campbell. ZINNIA AND DOT. Two chickens fight over who is the mother of an egg, until they decide to co-parent the chick that hatches.
Polacco, Patricia. RECHENKA’S EGGS. An injured goose lays 13 fancy decorated eggs for the Easter Festival.
Imai, Miko. LITTLE LUMPTY. Inspired by Humpty Dumpty, Lumpty climbs the town wall but cannot get down.
Simmons, Jane. DAISY AND THE EGG. Daisy waits for a new brother or sister to hatch.
Dunbar, Joyce. EGG DAY. Dora the duck gets the farm animals to participate in a contest to find out who lays the best egg.
