Lions Storytime
Animals are always a welcome theme at storytime! Try some of the books listed below. Try the song “Going on a Lion Hunt,” which is a variation on “Going on a Bear Hunt.” For an art project, make these simple lion masks using a paper plate for the base: Crafts for Kids - Lion Mask Craft (dltk-kids.com).
Axtell, David. We’re Going on a Lion Hunt. In this variation on “Going on a Bear Hunt,” two African girls go in search of a lion and see other animals on the savannah.
Banks, Kate. Lion Lullaby. In this counting book with repetition, lion cubs see various aspects of nature as they head home.
Berkes, Marianne. Over in the Grasslands. In this variation on “Over in the Meadow,” African animals and their offspring are shown and counted.
Carnesi, Monica. There’s a Lion in the Forest! South American animals think they hear a lion, even though lions don’t live there.
Dunbar, Polly. A Lion Is a Lion. Should you be afraid of a lion if he wears a hat and suit?
Freeman, Don. Dandelion. Lion dresses up for a birthday party.
Hartman, Brooke. Watch Out for the Lion! The reader is warned there is a lion in this book, and is given clues of what to look for.
Henkes, Kevin. Sun Flower Lion. In this clever story, readers are asked to look at the sun, or a flower, and see a lion.
Meza, Erika. As Brave as a Lion. A little girl is brave when she is with her lion, but learns he is afraid at times.
Peacock. Lou. Lionel and the Lion’s Share. Lionel learns to share when he goes to a birthday party.
Sauer, Tammi. Caring for Your Lion. Although he ordered a kitten, a boy receives a lion as a pet and learns to care for it.
Sperring, Mark. Daddy Lion’s Tea Party. Daddy Lion wants a quiet tea party but Elephant and the other zoo animals interrupt his plans.
Tinn-Disbury, Tom. Brian the Dancing Lion. Brian loves to dance but is hesitant to show off his talent, since lions are supposed to be fierce.
Walker, David. The Not-So-Brave Little Lion. A lion cub rescues his bird friend even though he doesn’t feel brave.
Wyatt, Edwina. Sometimes Cake. Audrey (a human) and Lion celebrate their friendship even on ordinary days.
