Computers and Technology Storytime – Revised
Even though we want to be cautious about how much screen time a young child is exposed to, a storytime on computers can help convey the message that screen time should be minimal and well-intentioned. For a technology related project, try one of these activities: Digital Literacy: Technology Activities for Preschoolers (mybrightwheel.com).
Here are some stories that can help a child understand why screen time should be something to engage in mindfully:
Howard, Betsy Childs. Polly and the Screen Time Overload. Polly realizes she is missing out when she stays inside on her tablet instead of going outside to play.
Krug, Matthias. Swish’s Digital Dilemma. Swish the shark persuades his ocean friends to put down their devices to play.
McCloskey, Shanda. DOLL-E 1.0. Charlotte tinkers with her new doll to add technological elements.
Pearlstein, Howard. Connor Crowe Can’t Let Go. Connor is addicted to his tablet device until he has a nightmare.
Reynolds, Peter H. Our Table. Violet is the only one at the dinner table because the rest of the family is on their devices.
Turu, Denise. Babbit & Joan, a Rabbit and a Phone. Babbit goes on a hike in the forest without his cell phone.
Zuckerberg, Randi. Dot Unplugged. During a power outage, young Dot and her family learn to have fun without using technology.
