Eggers, Dave. Her Right Foot. Shawn Harris, Illus. Non-fiction. Chronicle, 09/2017. 104pp. $19.99. 978-1-4521-6281-2. OUTSTANDING. GRADES K-3.
Full of random trivia, Eggers (This Bridge Will Not Be Gray, McSweeney, 2015) maintains the same flip tone without patronizing his audience as he investigates various minutiae around the United States’ largest sculpture. Harris’ picture book illustration debut features collage and India ink to depict a diverse cast. It’s a perfect fit for this compelling story, aimed at the 5- to 8-year-old set. Eggers’ conclusion that Lady Liberty is moving because she is an immigrant is particularly timely in today’s political climate. Clocking in at 104 pages, it runs longer than a traditional picture book format for the intended audince, but Harris’ talented artwork, combined with concise text, provide a fast trip through a little-known part of United States history. Back matter includes significant further reading as well as a list of six sources. A necessary purchase for most libraries. This book has California-specific content.
