New Flap and Toy Books
Educational Insights. The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel and the Golden Acorn. Candlewick, 10/2021. [12p.]. $11.99. 978-1-5362-2273-9.
Inspired by the preschool board game, this second board book with flaps stars a squirrel who is looking for a gold acorn. He looks in a tree, at the beach, in the ocean, and other places. Each spread has three flaps, except the last page which as a large pull-out featuring the acorn. This is too small to carry to a group but sturdy for one-on-one sharing.
Handford, Martin. Where’s Waldo? Santa Spotlight Search. Candlewick, 09/2021. [14p.]. $18.99. 978-1-5362-2013-
Six colorful puzzle pictures featuring Waldo and his friends on tinted transparencies are bound into each spread and make up this new entry in the popular series. Because this needs a special “slider,” which is a paper pointer found in the front inside cover to reveal Waldo, this won’t stand up to library usage.
McEwen, Katharine. Who’s Hiding in the Snow? Nosy Crow, 11/2021. [10p.]. $9.99. 978-1-5362-2023-0.
Filled with facts on animals that live in snowy areas, this seems best suited to early elementary age students because the facts are not simple and the flaps require some dexterity. Arranged by biome, the animals are shown in the Asian tundra, Antarctic, Eurasian mountains, Arctic, and Northern Lights area.
Pierpont, James Lord. Jingle Bells. Illus. by Nicola Slater. Nosy Crow, 09/2021. [10p.]. $17.99. 978-1-5362-2203-6.
In this simple board book, the lyrics of the popular holiday song make up the text, and a small battery-run speaker offers a tinny melody when a button is pressed. The cute artwork features animals in clothing making a snowman, sledding, etc. Any picture book version is better because the reader can sing the song.
