Jean Fritz Dies at Age 101: Award-winning author of nonfiction for children Jean Fritz died on May 14 at home in New York at age 101. She was a children’s librarian when she published her first book in 1958, The Cabin Faced West. She received the National Book Award and Newbery Honor for her memoir Homesick (1982), which described her youth as a child of missionaries in China. She also received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 1986, for her many biographies of noted figures in U.S. history.
