Caldecott Medalist Peter Spier Dies: Author/illustrator Peter Spier died on April 27, 2017 at age 89 in New York. Known for his detailed illustrations, often in wordless books, Spier received the Caldecott Medal for Noah’s Ark in 1977. The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night: an Old Song received a Caldecott Honor in 1961. Born in the Netherlands, Spier, his parents, and siblings were deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, but survived and were liberated by the Soviet Red Army in May 1945. Spier moved to the U.S. in 1951 to work in advertising, and soon gravitated to illustrating children’s books.
