Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards Announced: The 2018 Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards were announced on May 31th. The winners are:
Picture Book Award: They Say Blue written and illustrated by Jillian Tamaki.
Picture Book Honor Books: When’s My Birthday? by Julie Fogliano, illustrated by Christian Robinson and A Different Pond by Bao Phi, illustrated by Thi Bui.
Fiction and Poetry Award: The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo.
Fiction and Poetry Honor Books: The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson and The First Rule of Punk written and illustrated by Celia C. Pérez.
Nonfiction Award: Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide by Isabel Quintero, illustrated by Zeke Peña.
Nonfiction Honor Books: A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars by Seth Fishman, illustrated by Isabel Greenberg and The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater.
The winning titles must be published in the United States, but writers and illustrators do not have to be U.S. citizens.
“Now this is diversity with a small and capital D!,” Roger Sutton, editor in chief of the Horn Book, said in a statement. “I’d like to thank the judges for their discriminating choices and commitment to finding ‘excellence’—the only criterion used by the BGHB Awards—among the vast number of nominations.”
The 2018 Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards judges were Horn Book associate editor Katie Bircher, children’s book author and reviewer Minh Lê, and Cambridgeport Elementary School librarian and founder of the Cambridge (MA) Book Bike Liz Phipps Soeiro. The awards ceremony will be held Friday, October 5, at Simmons College in Boston.
