Koster, Amy Sky. Egg. Illus. by Lisel Jan Ashlock. Creative Editions, 02/2020. [16p.] $9.99. 978-1568463513.
In this beautifully illustrated board book, rhyming couplets describe the eggs in each spread: “Blue egg. New egg. / Dotted egg. Spotted egg.” The final spread shows a bird feeding the newborn chick in the nest. The illustrations appear to be watercolor and pencil featuring eggs on white backgrounds, and the last page labels each egg with the type of bird it came from. Technically, this is nonfiction but place it with other board books for optimal viewing by young children. Fun for a bird-themed storytime.
McQuinn, Anna. Lola Loves Stories with Daddy. Illus. by Rosalind Beardshaw. Charlesbridge, 2010/2020. [18p.] $7.99. 978-1-62354-180-4.
Originally published as a picture book, this board adaptation is a good option for libraries because it teaches the days of the week. Toddler Lola and her father visit the library on Saturdays, where they read together; each spread focuses on a new day where Lola reenacts one of the books checked out of the library. The full color illustrations depict the characters ethnically as African, and the artwork is vibrant and joyful. The final book hints at a classic picture book that Lola and her father read in time for Friday’s play.
