Author Patricia McKissack Dies: Award-winning children’s book author Patricia McKissack died on April 7, 2017 at age 72 in St. Louis. She often co-wrote with her husband Fredrick McKissack, Sr. who died in 2013. Many of their books celebrated African-American history, culture, and folklore. In 1993, Patricia McKissack received a Newbery Honor and a Coretta Scott King Award for The Dark Thirty: Southern Tales of the Supernatural (Random House, 1992). The McKissacks received Coretta Scott King Honors for Sojourner Truth: Ain’t I a Woman? (Scholastic, 1992) and Christmas in the Big House, Christmas in the Quarters (Scholastic, 1994).
