Author Marilyn Sachs Dies at Age 89: Marilyn Sachs, author of 40 books for children and teens, died at age 89 on Dec. 31, 2016. Sachs was formerly a librarian for the San Francisco Public Library, working until her fourth book allowed her to quit so she could write full time.
Sachs was one of the first to write about serious subjects in her novels for young people. These included The Bear’s House, which was a National Book Award finalist in 1972, Veronica Ganz (1968), A Pocket Full of Seeds (1973), and The Fat Girl (1984). She received her Masters in Library Science from Columbia University before moving to San Francisco with her husband Morris, and her children. She and her husband were married 70 years, and were both involved in politics and civil rights activism.
