Newbery, Caldecott, and Other ALA Awards Announced: The ALA Youth Media Awards were announced on January 27, 2020 in Philadelphia, naming the best of 2019 publications. The Newbery Medal went to Jerry Craft for New Kid, HarperCollins, and four Honor books were named:
Alexander, Kwame. The Undefeated, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt,
Heidicker, Christian McKay. Scary Stories for Young Foxes, Holt,
Warga, Jasmin. Other Words for Home, Balzer+Bray,
Williams, Alicia D. Genesis Begins Again, Atheneum.
The Caldecott Medal went to Kadir Nelson for the illustrations for The Undefeated, written by Kwame Alexander, and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Three Caldecott Honor books were named (award to the illustrator):
Bear Came Along, illustrated by LeUyen Pham, written by Richard T. Morris, Little Brown.
Double Bass Blues, illustrated by Rudy Gutierrez, written by Andrea J. Loney, Kropf,
Going Down Home with Daddy, illustrated by Daniel Minter, written by Kelly Starling Lyons, Peachtree.
The announcements also included the winner and honor books for the Coretta Scott King, Pura Belpre, Sibert, Geisel, and several other awards, listed at the website below:
